All the available research indicates that chiropractic care is safe for children and adults, and certainly compares favorably with other medical and health care techniques. The research watchdogs at Chiro.org unearthed a review of the research literature, comparing the safety of the chiropractic adjustment with the osteopathic and medical manipulation. The article was originally published in the journal Clinical Chiropractic, Volume 14, Issue 3: This new “best evidence” literature review explored reported adverse events and the overall safety of chiropractic pediatric care, as well as other forms of care for the same complaints routinely treated in a chiropractic office. The results were quite interesting:
The authors concluded that: The application of modern chiropractic paediatric care within the outlined framework is safe. A reasonable caution to the parent/guardian is that one child per 100 to 200 attending may have a mild adverse events, with irritability or soreness lasting less than 24 hours, resolving without the need for additional care beyond initial chiropractic recommendations. This particular review only compares the chiropractic adjustment with the osteopathic or medical manipulation, and describes the incidence of mild adverse events (residual soreness or irritability). If you are considering whether or not chiropractic care would be safe for your child, chiropractic has been consistently shown to be one of the safest treatment options, because it is non-invasive and because chiropractors are trained to modify their techniques based on the age and the conditions of the patient. One conclusion that can be drawn from this research is that chiropractors are the experts at chiropractic adjustments.
