This is Peoria's first cool evening in recent memory. The humidity has been blown away on the wind, and the sun appears to have been sapped of its burning powers. The breeze is gentle and cool... and it's one of the first breezes in months! I was watering my garden on this lovely evening, and, as is my nightly custom, watering the flowers on my front porch. My wife loves these beautiful flowers, but I've been watching them wither and die over the last several weeks. Our porch faces the west, so the sun's baking rays have soaked the porch every afternoon and evening. These poor flowers have literally been boiling in their own fluids. They are brown, wrinkly, and decrepit. Tonight, to my amazement, I saw new green shoots emerging from each and every one of the plants. I thought all of them were long dead, but they had merely been biding their time. Now that the weather is more suitable, they have decided to regale us with their colors. It makes me glad that my nightly watering has not been in vain. Every night, even though I thought the plants were dead, I gave them life-giving water anyway. "It can't hurt," I thought, "and it only takes a few minutes." What is this mysterious power of life, that suddenly arises when the conditions are right? Given the right temperatures and the right amount of water: that which was thought injured and dead is now vibrant and alive! These plants no longer remember the pain of their daily heat torture: now they glory in their ability to function. This miracle is the foundation of what I do as a chiropractor. I do not heal, I do not cure. I simply water. The same power of life that manifests in these plants is also present in each one of us. The chiropractic adjustment is the nurturing hand, and is used only to bring forth your own life. When your body decides that the conditions are right, when the toxic rays of the sun have dimmed, when the boiling trauma of oppression has ceased, when the stressors have been relieved: then will your body be pain-free. Then will your garden flourish.
