Press release from the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress
As the St. Louis Cardinals celebrate their 11th World Series title and the San Francisco Giants relive their 2010 championship, the Foundation for Chiropractic Progress points to the role of chiropractic care in promoting faster recoveries, reduced risk of injury and enhanced on-field performance. Chiropractic team doctors Ralph Filson, D.C. of the Cardinals, and Michael Gazdar, D.C. of the San Francisco Giants, explain that regular chiropractic care provides baseball players with proper spinal function and balance to reduce the risk of spine-related injuries, enhance recovery time and improve overall performance. Dr. Filson, who began providing care to the players in 1990 through its then manager, Joe Torre, Major League Baseball (MLB) legend, says, “Chiropractic care is always available for players of the Cardinals and the visiting team, it is utilized by many. With chiropractic care, players report that they feel better and have better endurance. Body mechanics are significantly improved, enabling better pitching, hitting and throwing.” Jason Motte, relief pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals, shares, "I had issues with my shoulder and arm for a long time. I started seeing Dr. Filson this year. Since then, I have not had any arm problems. The whole team appreciates him and the work he did throughout the season. I know while being under Dr. Filson's care, I was able to feel 100 percent while on the mound.” In 2006, Dr. Filson was awarded a World Series ring for his role with the Cardinals, and was proud to play a similar role in the 2011 championship. He also treated David Eckstein, Most Valuable Player on the Cardinals 2006 World Series Team, citing the importance of chiropractic care in helping players to achieve optimal performance: “I am proud to have provided chiropractic care to the Cardinals for so many years, and gratified that chiropractic has contributed to the players’ optimal performance during every game. We are all excited about bringing home the 2011 World Series title.” According to Dr. Gazdar, who began working with the San Francisco Giants in 2008, and was seen by millions celebrating at the pitcher’s mound with the players following the game-ending play that resulted in the Giants World Series title, “Chiropractic care was a significant factor in the San Francisco Giants 2010 victory. One of the Giants’ pitchers relied upon chiropractic adjustments for all of his pitching starts, and virtually every player benefited from chiropractic services.” Both doctors express their enthusiasm for the inclusion of chiropractic care for virtually every team participating in professional sports, including golf, football, hockey, basketball and baseball. The Webster chiropractic technique is not designed to turn babies who are in the breech position. Its purpose is to relax the muscles and ligaments surrounding the uterus, which allows the baby freedom of movement. Given the ability to move, babies tend to seek out the proper position for birth on their own. Often, the turning of a "breech baby" is simply a welcome side effect of the correct application of the Webster technique. That said, there is a spectacular case study from earlier this year, published in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal, & Family Health. In this case, a 25 year old mother had been diagnosed with a baby in breech position at 31 weeks. The chiropractors who were consulted by the mother verified that the baby was in a breech position, and applied the Webster technique analysis and adjustment twice. After the first adjustment, the baby turned from a breech position (feet down) to a transverse position (baby lying horizontal). After the second adjustment, the baby turned from the transverse position to a vertex position (head down), which is the optimal position for a normal vaginal birth. The mother went on to deliver her baby naturally and in good health. (Read the full case study here.) Some mothers and babies tend to respond very quickly to the Webster technique, as in this case. Others may need more visits. This baby may have been more likely to turn because of the relative earliness of this case (it is considered more difficult for the baby to turn on its own after 34 weeks because of the size of the growing baby). However, the mother's prompt action after having been told by her pediatrician stood her in good stead: not only did early action before the baby outgrew the "window of opportunity" seem necessary to her, but the mother saved herself weeks of stress and worry about the looming C-section. Maternal stress can only harm both the mother and baby prior to delivery. LESS LIGHT! OK, I can hear all the groaning… we're really stretching it this time. But in some way this statement is true. The primary purpose of Chiropractic is to locate and correct subluxations. When you break the word down into its roots, "SUB-LUX-ATION," you get this… "SUB" – means less than, or lower than normal "LUX" – is Latin for LIGHT and "ATION" – is a state of being, or a condition The literal definition of subluxation is a state or condition of less LIGHT or power than normal. Subluxations occur when spinal bones mis-align and restrict the normal flow of “light” through the spinal cord and nerves. The effect… your body gets less of the life energy or “light” it needs from the nerve system to maintain health and vitality. When chiropractors locate and correct subluxations, they're removing blockages to the light so it can flow freely through your nerve system, illuminating every cell, tissue and organ in your body. If sub-lux-ations produce darkness in your health, chiropractic adjustments bring EN-LIGHTEN-MENT. So don’t let the shorter, darker days get you down. Fall back into a healthy chiropractic routine and keep your nerve system lit up. Life is brighter when you’re subluxation free. Content provided by Principle33. Press release from the CDC Kill More Americans Than Heroin And Cocaine Combined The death toll from overdoses of prescription painkillers has more than tripled in the past decade, according to an analysis in the CDC Vital Signs report released today from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This new finding shows that more than 40 people die every day from overdoses involving narcotic pain relievers like hydrocodone (Vicodin), methadone, oxycodone (OxyContin), and oxymorphone (Opana). “Overdoses involving prescription painkillers are at epidemic levels and now kill more Americans than heroin and cocaine combined, ” said CDC Director Thomas Frieden, M.D., M.P.H. “States, health insurers, health care providers and individuals have critical roles to play in the national effort to stop this epidemic of overdoses while we protect patients who need prescriptions to control pain. ” The increased use of prescription painkillers for nonmedical reasons (without a prescription for the high they cause), along with growing sales, has contributed to the large number of overdoses and deaths. In 2010, 1 in every 20 people in the United States age 12 and older—a total of 12 million people—reported using prescription painkillers nonmedically according to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Based on the data from the Drug Enforcement Administration, sales of these drugs to pharmacies and health care providers have increased by more than 300 percent since 1999. “Prescription drug abuse is a silent epidemic that is stealing thousands of lives and tearing apart communities and families across America, ” said Gil Kerlikowske, Director of National Drug Control Policy. “From day one, we have been laser–focused on this crisis by taking a comprehensive public health and public safety approach. All of us have a role to play. Health care providers and patients should be educated on the risks of prescription painkillers. And parents and grandparents can take time today to properly dispose of any unneeded or expired medications from the home and to talk to their kids about the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs. ” In April, the Administration released a comprehensive action plan to address the national prescription drug abuse epidemic to reduce this public health burden. Titled “Epidemic: Responding to America’s Prescription Drug Abuse Crisis,” the plan includes support for the expansion of state–based prescription drug monitoring programs, more convenient and environmentally responsible disposal methods to remove unused medications from the home, education for patients and healthcare providers, and support for law enforcement efforts that reduce the prevalence of "pill mills" and doctor shopping. Already, 48 states have implemented state–based monitoring programs designed to reduce diversion and doctor shopping while protecting patient privacy and the Department of Justice has conducted a series of takedowns of rogue pain clinics operating as “pill mills. ” President Obama has also signed into law the Secure and Responsible Drug Disposal Act, which will allow states and local communities to collect and safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs and support DEA’s ongoing national efforts to collect unneeded or expired prescription drugs which have collected over 300 tons of medications over the past year. “Almost 5,500 people start to misuse prescription painkillers every day, ” said Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Administrator Pamela S. Hyde. “Just like other public health epidemics, community–based prevention can be a proven, life–saving and cost–effective key to breaking the trend and restoring health and well–being. ” The prescription painkiller death rates among non–Hispanic whites and American Indians/Alaska Natives were three times those of blacks and Hispanic whites. In addition, the death rate was highest among persons aged 35–54 years. Overdose resulted in 830,652 years of potential life lost before age 65 years, a number comparable to the years of potential life lost from motor vehicle crashes and much higher than the years of potential life lost due to homicide. For the analysis, CDC reviewed state data on fatal drug overdoses, nonmedical use of prescription painkillers, and sales of prescription painkillers to pharmacies and health care providers. The study found:

Many people think of chiropractic as a treatment for back or neck pain. However, the chiropractic adjustment can be effective anywhere that joints, nerves, muscles, and bones are found in the human body. Doctors of chiropractic are trained to find and treat joint dysfunction throughout the spine and the extremities.
In a clinical trial, chiropractic care was determined to be as effective as conservative medical care for carpal tunnel syndrome. The chiropractic adjustment is key to reestablishing the proper relationships of upper extremity joints, restoring proper nervous system function as seen in this study on cubital tunnel syndrome patients. Doctors recognize that it is appropriate to use gentle care when treating the wrist and hands, which are quite delicate and sensitive, especially in older adults and children. The Activator instrument is often recommended for wrist adjustments because of its low force and precision of direction. Dr. Johnson exclusively uses the Activator Methods when treating wrist complaints. After a thorough history and examination, your Peoria chiropractor can also recommend proper alternative treatments for you, such as ergonomic modifications, anti-inflammatory diets, ice, traction, braces, exercises, stretches, Vitamin B6 supplementation, cold laser therapy, ultrasound therapy, and more. |
