The Webster technique is a chiropractic adjustment which is appropriate for weightbearing patients of all ages. It specifically analyzes the proper function of the large bone at the base of the spine called the sacrum. Please go to our Webster technique page for a full description of the technique and why it works. The Webster technique is especially popular among pregnant mothers preparing for the birth of their child. In regards to expectant mothers, Dr. Larry Webster, the founder of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association (ICPA) and discoverer of the Webster technique, reported that when a mother sought care and her baby was in a breech position, the restoration of pelvic neuro-biomechanics with this adjustment also frequently facilitated optimal fetal positioning. There are cases published in the chiropractic literature that support his theory. More research is needed and is currently underway by the ICPA. Please go to our Webster technique page for a full description of the technique and why it works. The best part of the Webster technique is how gentle it is. At Johnson Family Chiropractic, we are proud to offer chiropractic techniques that are safe, effective, and comfortable. The Webster technique merely requires the patient to lay comfortably during a brief analysis of the sacrum's positioning within the body. The doctor of chiropractic may, if joint dysfunction is seen, perform a gentle chiropractic adjustment that is safe for both the mother and baby (if the patient is pregnant). The Webster technique protocol also alleviates tender spots at the front of the abdomen, which will help both mother and baby (again, if the patient is pregnant and preparing for childbirth). Dr. Johnson usually recommends chiropractic care for pregnant women throughout the pregnancy to detect any sacral problems and help any back discomfort prior to childbirth, and for six weeks after birth to ensure that the mother's joints and ligaments recover properly from the birth process. Dr. Johnson is fully certified as a Webster technique doctor. Only certified chiropractors can be considered Webster technique practitioners. A success story about jaw pain and Activator Methods chiropractic, by Dr. Tom DeVita:
A 45-year-old woman came into my office this past spring complaining of severe TMJ pain and discomfort. She was also unable to open her mouth more than 10mm and had extreme difficulty eating or even chewing her food. When she opened her mouth or tried to chew there were loud popping and clicking noises. This problem was going on for two weeks before she came into my office and was only getting worse. She also complained of concurrent headaches with the jaw pain, and neck stiffness and tightness. She has had TMD issues in the past but never as intense or severe as this particular episode. [snip] Adjusting protocol started with the Activator Basic protocol, working up the spine with adjustments in the pelvis , thoracic and cervical spine. After the Basic protocol was completed, advanced tests of the TMJ protocol were utilized with adjustments to specific jaw areas as found. This protocol was followed over a three week period of time with a re-evaluation to determine outcomes at three weeks. She was also taught postural consideration for her neck in particular, along with specific cervical spine exercises. She was told to cut her food into small pieces and to chew slowly and completely with each mouthful. She was to avoid hard crusty foods, and if she ate an apple, she should cut it into slices as opposed to taking a big bite. On re-exam her mouth opening measurement went from 10mm to 35mm. On stressing the TMJ with AP and lateral to medial motion, pain was minimal with less popping and clicking. Cervical range of motion improved in all ranges with less pain and discomfort; headaches were no longer an issue. The patient also explained that eating was now significantly easier and close to normal. Frequency of care was decreased and the adjusting and exercise protocol continued. At the end of six weeks of care her mouth opening was at 40mm and pain was very minimal in the jaw. Residual popping and clicking remained but at a very mild level. She was then moved to monthly care and told to continue with her postural and exercise protocols as well as chewing slowly while eating. Utilizing Activator Methods Basic and Advanced protocols enabled us to have a good outcome with this case. There's no way to fully protect yourself from the viruses which cause sneezing, coughing, and feverish chills. The difference is how your body reacts to the flu virus. Researchers at the University of Michigan recently performed a startling study. They intentionally infected people with a flu virus in order to see how their bodies would be affected. To their surprise, only half of the people showed the normal miserable symptoms of the flu. But all of them showed a significant immune response to the virus. In other words, all of the study participants got the flu. All of them had the virus, and all of them mobilized their immune systems to fight it off. Yet half of them never felt a thing. Here's a quote from the MSNBC story on the study: Lamar Johnson, 44, of Minneapolis, says he’s often wondered if drinking several glasses of juice daily and eating loads of fresh produce keeps him healthy — because in the dead of winter, when everyone around him seems to be suffering from the flu, he never gets sick. In fact, he doesn’t believe he’s ever had the flu in his life. “I just stay out of the cold, do my best to stay away from sick people and hope I don’t get sick,” he says. Indeed, Hero says drinking juice, and eating fresh fruits and vegetables to load up on antioxidants may be the answer to avoid getting sick with the flu. So The Flu Can Be Prevented?Yes, it appears that the flu can be prevented by a properly functioning immune system. The study highlights an important chemical component to the immune system: antioxidants which are found in fresh fruits, vegetables, juice, and even coffee. Antioxidants provide extra help to the immune system.
Unfortunately, there is a lack of evidence that flu shots prevent flu symptoms, decrease missed workdays, or reduce illness complications. Are there other natural, non-invasive ways to prevent the flu? Are there any other ways to support the immune system? Here is a great resource on how to prevent the flu using everyday resources. Green tea, in moderate quantities of 1-5 cups per day, appears to have antiviral properties and may be helpful in flu prevention. Chiropractic care is recommended, because proper functioning of the neuroimmune system is extremely important. The purpose of chiropractic is to ensure the proper communication of the nervous system, which directly controls the proper functioning of the immune system. If your nervous system can immediately alert and facilitate the proper distribution of the immune system responses after the first viral invasion, your body will be much more likely to be able to fight off the infection before it reaches the symptomatic stage. How is this possible? The symptoms we dread are nothing more than the entire body's defense against the flu. If the immune system is unable to quickly identify and kill all the flu viruses, the body mobilizes extra defenses. A fever is the body's attempt to create an unfavorable environment for the viruses. A runny nose is the body's attempt to trap and eliminate viruses caught in the nasal mucus. A foggy head is the body's attempt to reallocate resources to the virus battle. All of these symptoms are your body's proper responses to the virus, if the front line cellular defenses are not enough. Preparation, a thoughtful diet, and chiropractic care can provide an excellent way to fight off the viruses before your body reaches the symptomatic stage. Because, after all, even if you don't get symptoms this year, you will most surely get the flu. How your body fights it is up to you. |
