There are many medical reasons why a couple may find it difficult or even impossible to conceive a child, and prolonged infertility can cause many serious emotional and physical difficulties. It is estimated that as many as one in six couples may struggle in conceiving children, though the good news is that nearly one in five of these couples will eventually become pregnant without any treatment at all.
One female condition which can cause infertility is called Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a hormonal imbalance condition which can cause many health problems. A woman's body relies on a finely-tuned balance of hormones in order to regulate the reproductive system. But if her body is creating too much of one hormone, her organs will respond according to this increased amount of hormone and may not perform properly. Women with PCOS will often find it difficult to conceive a child. But, using chiropractic care, one woman found a surprising method to regulate her hormones and encourage conception! A dramatic case study was published in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health this month, in which a 29 year old woman with PCOS came to a chiropractic office after over six months of inability to conceive. The chiropractors treated the woman with chiropractic adjustments. After just a few short months, the woman found out that she had conceived soon after the chiropractic care had begun! The chiropractors continued to adjust the woman throughout her pregnancy, and she went on to deliver a healthy child. The authors of the case study are careful to declare that this one case does not provide proof that chiropractic care can treat infertility, but they do encourage researchers to continue investigating the relationship between chiropractic, PCOS, and infertility issues. They do state that "this case study shows that chiropractic care is beneficial for improving quality of life and other health parameters by removing vertebral subluxations, possibly leading to fertility and ability to become pregnant." It has long been known that chiropractic affects the nervous system. Indeed, restoring proper nerve function is the purpose of the chiropractic adjustment. It is also well known that the nervous system controls every other system in the body, including the hormonal system. Nerves help to detect the levels of hormones in the body and communicate to the tissues which create more or less of the hormones. It is possible that in this one case, the woman did not have a hormone problem, but a nerve problem that affected the hormone balance. This case of fertility is a very exciting and encouraging case: you never know what chiropractic just might be able to help!

From the Peoria City/County Health Department:
Since 1995, communities across the country have celebrated the first full week of April as National Public Health Week. This year during April 2-8, 2012, the Peoria City/County Health Department will celebrate the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the health of the community. "Public health departments contribute to health by protecting the water we drink, the food we eat, and providing health protection through immunizations," says Greg Chance, Public Health Administrator for Peoria City/County Health Department. "Additionally, it is the local health department that serves as the sentinel to ensure that infectious diseases do not gain a foothold in our community." Chance states, "The health of a community depends on many different factors, including quality of health care, individual behavior, education and jobs, and the environment. The Peoria County Community Health Improvement Plan 2011 identifies three priority community health challenges that must be addressed to improve public health in Peoria County - obesity, oral health, and reproductive health. The Plan outlines suggested community-based health improvement programs and services to address these public health challenges. However, the Community Health Improvement Plan emphasizes that Peoria County will not make significant public health improvements unless all Peoria County residents get involved in creating a healthier community." "The community health system includes everyone who has a responsibility to promote good health in our communities," Chance adds. "If just one neighborhood enhances the ability for local residents to exercise more, one employer launches an exercise program, or one group of people join together to bring fresh fruit to schools, we can create a group of community health successes. Celebrate public health success and commit to health improvement during National Public Health Week and all year long as we work together. A healthier Peoria County begins today, join the movement." A press release from the United States Office of Inspector General:
Criminals who plot to defraud the Government and steal money from the American people have a new target: people with diabetes. Although the precise method may vary, the scheme generally involves someone pretending to be from the Government, a diabetes association, or even Medicare, calling you. The caller offers "free" diabetic supplies, such as glucose meters, diabetic test strips, or lancets. The caller may also offer other supplies such as heating pads, lift seats, foot orthotics, or joint braces, in exchange for the beneficiaries' Medicare or financial information, or confirmation of this type of personal information. Additionally, you may receive items in the mail that you did not order. The call is a scam. 1. Protect Your Medicare and Other Personal Information Do not provide your Medicare number or other personal information. Be suspicious of anyone who offers free items or services and then asks for your Medicare or financial information. These calls are not coming from Medicare, diabetes associations, or other similar organizations. While the caller says the items are "free," the items are still billed to Medicare. Once your Medicare information is in the hands of a dishonest person or supplier, you are susceptible to further scams. Alert others about this scheme, and remind them not to provide strangers Medicare numbers or other personal information. 2. Report the Call to Law Enforcement Report the call to the OIG Hotline at 1-800-HHS-TIPS or online at www.OIG.HHS.gov/fraud/hotline. As part of your report, provide the name of the company that called you, the company's telephone number and address, and a summary of your conversation with the caller. 3. Check Your Medicare Summary Notice and Medicare Bills Check your Medicare Summary Notice and other medical information to see if you were charged for items you did not order or did not receive. Also, check for items that were billed multiple times, such as glucose meters, diabetes test strips and lancets, and other supplies. Report any irregular activity to your health care provider and the OIG Hotline at 1-800-HHS-TIPS or online at www.OIG.HHS.gov/fraud/hotline. 4. Do Not Accept Items That You Did Not Order You are under no obligation to accept items that you did not order. Instead, you should refuse the delivery and/or return to the sender. Keep a record of the sender's name and the date you returned the item(s) to help OIG catch any future illegal billing. When you're trying to lose those extra five pounds but you've plateaued at a weight line, exercise can be frustrating. Any extra tip can be helpful. So, here's a fascinating tip from a recent study reported in the LA Times:
A study finds that holding a hand-cooling device while exercising may help obese women keep moving longer. [snip]Two dozen women ages 30 to 45 exercised three days a week for 12 weeks. Some held a palm-cooling device chilled to about 61 degrees during cardio portions of their workouts. The others held the same device, but theirs was at normal body temperature, 98.6 degrees. All study participants worked toward exercising for 45-minute periods at 80% of their maximum heart rates. During the three months the group that held the cooling device cut an average of five minutes off their time during a 1.5-mile walk, reduced their waist size by an average of almost three inches, lowered their resting blood pressure and increased their exercise heart rate. Those in the control group saw no significant changes. [Lead author Stacy] Sims, an exercise physiologist and nutrition scientist at Stanford University added, “If you can slow the rate internal temperature rises and cool someone who is obese, they don’t store as much heat and don’t feel as uncomfortable. They can do more work.” But it's also important to remember that "doing more work" doesn't necessarily mean that you should exercise longer. Daily exercise for 15 to 30 minutes is usually enough to keep most people fit. If you can only exercise three times a week, then aim for 30 to 45 minutes. Optimum health is generally found in moderation of exercise and diet, so overdoing intensity or frequency of exercise may well backfire unless you're already a top-conditioned elite athlete. If you have found results by using a palm-cooling device, or are looking for more tips on exercise, leave a comment below or ask Dr. Johnson directly. |
